Charles Homer Henry age 67, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009.

Chuck was a member of the Eagles and Masonic Lodge #192 F & AM of Westville, IN.

Survivors: sons, Timmy Henry of Plainfield, IL, Shaun Henry of San Antonio, TX; daughters, Cindy Call of Portage, IN, Sherry Nordengreen of Chicago, IL, Devon Kovacik of Hobart, IN; sister, JoAnna Stone of Marion, KY; 10 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Rex and Etheleen Schafer Henry, one sister, Sue Thompson.

Verl Tom Palmer

Verl “Tom” Palmer, age 63, of Wanatah, formerly of Kouts, passed away on Monday, November 7, 2005 at his home.

He was born on April 18, 1942 in Centerville, IN, the son of Verl and Elizabeth (Collier) Palmer, graduated from Centerville High School in 1960 then served with the U.S. Air Force until 1968. He had worked at the Water Department of the Westville Correctional Center for the past year.

He was a lifetime member of Kouts American Legion Post, member of B.P.O.E. Elks 500 in Valparaiso and the Westville Masonic Lodge and former member of Orak Shrine.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Linda (Howard) Palmer of Wanatah; three children: Verl T. Palmer, Jr. of Missouri, Jody (Jon) McMabel of Knightstown, IN and Judy (Matt) Gerrassimoff of Arizona; two step-sons: David (Debbie) Cincoski of Chesterton, Daniel Cincoski, Jr. of Rolling Prairie; his mother, Elizabeth Palmer of Centerville; one brother, Edward (Pat) Palmer of Centerville and six grandchildren: Jon-Eric, Lauren, Austin, Alex, Alexandria and Madison. He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at Wanatah Funeral Chapel with Rev. Craig Forwalter officiating with burial to follow. Visitation will be held on Wednesday 4-8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westville Masonic Lodge or Kouts American Legion Post. Wanatahfuneralchapel.com.

Jimmy D. Bremer

Jimmy D. Bremer, 75, a lifetime Wanatah resident passed away Monday, May 16, 2005 at the Willows in Valparaiso.

He was born May 24, 1929 and was the son of Fred and Ida (Fritz) Bremer. He graduated from Wanatah High School in 1947, served with the U.S. Army as a medic in Korea from 1951-53, then as a lineman with REMC and had owned and operated J.G. Electrical with longtime partner Gus Schuelke the remainder of his life.

He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Wanatah American Legion #403, V.F.W. Post #94, Westville Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite of South Bend. Jimmy had previously served as a special Deputy with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Police, Cass Township Justice of the Peace and Wanatah Town Council President.

He is survived by one sister, Marguerite Leck of Union Mills and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Ruth Bos, Irene Morris and Oguerite Schlundt and one brother, James Bremer.

Funeral services will be held Friday 11:00 a.m. at Wanatah Funeral Chapel, Rev. Craig Forwalter officiating with military honors by Wanatah American Legion Post #403 and burial at Salem Cemetery. Visitation Thursday, 4:00-8:00 p.m. with Masonic Service at 7:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Wanatah American Legion, Salem U.C.C, or the donor’s choice

Wayne Marion Walter

Wayne Marion Walter Wanatah Wayne Marion Walter, age 91, a lifetime Wanatah area resident, passed away Monday, February 14, 2005 at Porter Hospital.

He was born October 12, 1913 in St. Joseph County the son of Marion and Carrie (Waltz) Walter and attended Walkerton schools. He had farmed, worked at Allis-Chalmers for 12 years, owned and operated Wanatah Community Hardware and drove a bus for Clinton Township Schools.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Westville Masonic Lodge #192 F& AM, Orak Temple Shrine of Michigan City, Supreme Council of 33rd Degree Masons, Royal Order of Jesters and Royal Order of Scotland. He was a longtime member of the Wanatah Lions Club.

On January 1, 1935 in Tracy, IN he married Millie Heath who preceded him in death on May 2, 2004. Survivors include their son; George (Janice) Walter of Wanatah, 3 grandchildren; Jeff (Chris) Walter of Wanatah, Greg (Wendy) Walter of Hanna, Susan (Daryl) Goodwin of Wanatah, three sisters; Irma Nelson of North Liberty, Edna Downey of Walkerton, Margaret Marquis of Columbia, SC, and nine great grandchildren; Carrie, Evan and Garrett Walter, Whitney, Emma and Madisyn Walter and Katlyn, Kaleb and Kendra Goodwin. He was also preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Funeral Services will be held Friday at 10:00 AM at Faith United Methodist Church, Wanatah, Pastor Dee Miller officiating with entombment at Graceland Mausoleum. Visitation will be Thursday 4:00-8:00 PM at Wanatah Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to service at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Faith United Methodist Lift of Hope.

Andrew G. Schoppel

Andrew G. Schoppel

Mar. 11, 1919 – Aug. 5, 2004 Andrew G. “Bud” Schoppel, 85, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 5, 2004, in his Wanatah home after a brief illness.

He was born March 11, 1919, in Gary to Martha (Sipos) and Andrew Schoppel. In 1949 he married Myrtle Weber in Zion Evanglical United Brethren (now Faith United Methodist) Church parsonage, Wanatah. The Rev. George St. Angelo preformed the ceremony. She preceded him in death in 1996.

He graduated from Merrillville High School in 1937 and remained friends with classmates throughout his life. Bud Schoppel grew up farming near where I-65 & US 30 are today, moving to Wanatah in 1939. When he was 27, he went into partnership with Roy Mitchell of Mitchell & Schoppel, later owning the International Harvester farm implement dealership in Wanatah, then LaCrosse, until he retired in 1981. His favorite color was red. He and Myrt “wintered” in Avon Park, FL, from 1978 until he sold his home there in 2003.

A past master and 50 year member of the Westville Masonic Lodge #192, he also belonged to the Orak Shrine, Michigan City.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers, Elizabeth (Wilfred) Werner, Martha (Homer) Grismer, Edward Schoppel and Robert Schoppel. Survivors include: sisters-in-law, Beulah Schoppel and Ethel Kirk; several nieces and nephews, Earl (Colleen) Werner, Jerry (Sandy) Werner, Charles Grismer, David (Patti) Grismer, Brian (Linda) Schoppel, Janet Schoppel, Ralph Schoppel and Mary Jo (David) Finley; great and great great nieces and nephews and many more who called him “Uncle Bud”.

His funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 9, at Salem United Church of Christ, 302 S. Main St., Wanatah. Rev. Craig Forwalter will officiate. Calling will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, August 8, at the Church, with Masonic Services at 7 p.m. Memorial Contributions can be made to Salem United Church of Christ or to the Westville Masonic Lodge # 192. Bartholomew Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
